User Groups & Access Permissions in ScaleGrowth
ScaleGrowth offers a highly customizable access control system to help you deliver the right content to the right users. In this guide, we’ll walk through the layers of access permissions you can configure at both the Space and individual Listing level using User Groups.
1. Space-Wide Access Permissions
To configure access for a specific space:
- Enter Admin mode.
- Navigate to the space you want to configure.
- Click Settings (top right corner).
- Scroll to the Access section.
You’ll find the following key settings:
a. Who can see this Space in the navigation menu
This controls which User Groups can see the menu item and navigate to the space. If a User Group is not listed here, the Space won't appear for them in the menu.
b. Who can see content in this space
This is one of the most important settings. Only the User Groups listed here will be able to browse individual listings inside the Space.
- Special User Group: No Account
- Add this to make the Space public. Anyone (even logged-out users) will be able to view content.
- If No Account is not added, logged-out users will be redirected to log in or sign up based on your platform settings.
c. Who can click on CTAs of each listing
Controls who can interact with action buttons like:
- RSVPing to events
- Responding to marketplace or custom listing CTAs
- Downloading files or accessing resources
d. Who can see the Details view of each listing
Each Listing has a dedicated landing page (the “Details View”), with its own shareable URL. You can restrict who can view these Details pages separately from general content access.
By default, both CTA and Details view permissions inherit from the “Who can see content in this Space” setting. But you can configure them separately.
e. Who can Add items to this Space
Configure whether only your admin/moderator team or other User Groups can submit new content. You can also enable Admin Approval before submissions go live using the Require Admin Approval to Publish New Submissions checkbox.
2. Advanced Space Permissions
a. Who can pin listings
Featured listings appear at the top of the Space. By default, only admins/moderators should have this permission, but you can expand it to other User Groups if needed.
b. Who can edit others’ listings
Admins/moderators can always edit all content. To enable collaborative or wiki-style contributions, you can extend this permission to other User Groups.
Use case: A community knowledge hub where members can iterate on each other's posts.
c. Show content from other Spaces
ScaleGrowth allows cross-space content embedding. This is an advanced use case – please reach out to our team to learn more.
d. Custom message for users without access
Use the Upsell Conversion Settings section in Space Settings to customize the message shown to users who lack access.
You can:
- Explain why access is restricted
- Provide instructions (e.g., “upgrade membership” or “contact support”)
- Add an upsell button to convert visitors into members
3. Per-Listing Access Overrides
Admins can override Space-level permissions for individual listings. When adding or editing a Listing, scroll to the Access Control section (visible to Admins only). You can:
- Override "who can see content"
- e.g., Make a single listing public even if the Space is restricted.
- Override CTA click permissions
- Override detail view access
This granular control lets you craft user journeys where default Space permissions apply broadly, but exceptions can be configured on a case-by-case basis.
4. Common Use Cases Enabled by Access Settings
- Public-facing spaces: Use No Account User Group and open CTAs to engage anonymous visitors.
- Members-only directories: Restrict all access to member user groups.
- Upsell journeys: Customize epsilon conversion messages and CTA lockouts to drive membership conversions.
- Collaborative knowledge hubs: Allow editing and submission from select User Groups.
- Private launches or early access content: Override listing access for beta testers or VIPs.
