The many Personalization Tokens you can use with our Email Templates allow powerful customization – but what happens if the corresponding field is missing for a given recipient?

The ScaleGrowth Email Engine offers a large set of Personalization Tokens you can use for different Trigger Events.


However, depending on your platform configuration, it may be possible for a Member to receive an automated Email before they filled out the corresponding field.


For example, you may allow anyone with No Account or Members who haven't completed Onboarding yet to post content – yet you may want to set up an automation thanking them for it.


Let's say your Email starts with a "Hi {{first_name}} ..." – how would this appear to a recipient who hasn't entered their First Name yet?


To address this, ScaleGrowth supports setting Default Values for Personalization Tokens – similar to how the likes of HubSpot or CampaignMonitor do. To configure these:

  • Enter Admin if you aren't already
  • Head to Email > Platform Email Settings
  • Click on Token Default Values tab
  • Update the default values and click Save at the bottom

All done!


💡 As a Best Practice, we recommend setting the default for {{first_name}} to something like "Valued Customer" or "Friend" – while keeping the default for {{last_name}} blank. This way, even if there is something like "Dear {{first_name}} {{last_name}} ..." in your Email Template, it will come across nicely as "Dear Valued Customer ..." or "Dear Friend ..."
